It is represented by over 35,000 independent well trained agents in more than 5,700 agencies in 25 states, commonly in the Midwest and Florida. This company has more than 4.1 million personal and commercial beneficial insurance policies in their force. In 2004, Auto-owners had revenues of $5.0 billion and gross income of $623 million. At the financial year end of 2005, Auto-owners had a combined $11billion. The company has regional offices situated in Peoria, IL: Lexington, KY and Traverse City, MI. the company was opened new offices by the year 2005 in Tallahassee, FL and the Minneapolis-Twin Cities area.
Auto-Owners Insurance founded by Vern V. Moulton in the year 1916, started Auto-Owners Insurance Company which is in Mt. Pleasant, MI. The new company had no capital and it was housed in one room of the bank building. Auto-owners worked in Mt. Pleasant for less than a year. In 1917, v.v. Moulton literally picked the Company up, placed it under his arm and in his pocket (the Company consisted of one book of policyholders names and $ 174.25 in assets), and moved Auto-Owners to Lansing, MI. the company was wrote insurance exclusively in Michigan from the year 1916 until 1935 before expanding to neighboring states. After offering auto insurance, the company began selling the property insurance in 1940.
