As a testament to its devotion to educators, the company was renamed in honor of Horace Mann who was an American education reformer during the nineteenth-century. In 1949, the company began to sell life insurance in addition to its auto offerings, and in 1961, it began selling annuities. Horace Mann Company was purchased and sold a number of times during the 1970s and 80s, and in 1991, the company became publicly traded.
