On March 5, 1853 Saint Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company was formed in an effort to assist local consumers who were forced to wait unreasonable amounts of time for claims because they were located too far from their insurance companies. Soon after its formation, the company had to dramatically restructure in order to survive difficult economic times. On April 1, 2001 the Saint Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company merged with Travelers Insurance to form St. Paul Travelers Companies, Inc. When the company began to be publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 2007, its name was changed again to The Travelers Companies, Inc. The company is the second largest property-casualty in the United States and offers discounts for multi-car policies, hybrids, good driving records, and good student records.
