I after 2 weeks with no response, I began repeatedly trying to call the claims agent I had been assigned. She never returned her calls and was always out of the office. The shop they recommeded gave me a lower estimate than Allstate did. They called me to pick up my car but it wasn’t done and they had overlooked some damage under the hood which caused mechanical failure. On March 4, 1902, due to the conditions of roads and hightways, the American Autombile Association (also known as AAA) was created in Chicago, Illinois. The charter started with only 1000 members, however, they continued to expand. Its base began with 9 local and regional motor clubs and remains the same to this day. The motor clubs joined together and became a powerful entity. As time went by the organization added more services. The AAA provided road maps and hotel guides for travelers. The AAA began its School Safety Program in 1920. Many other driver safety programs followed. Members belong to each individual club and the clubs belong to AAA. AAA also has international affiliates. In 1922 William Garrison called a meeting with 24 other officers, the topic to be discussed, solutions of the never ending problems that army officers had with auto insurance, due to the fact that they moved around a lot, their insurance payments were extremely high, and were prone to cancellation, leaving officers without insurance, they came to an agreement to form a mutual company, and named it the United States Army Automobile Association. Within 2 months the new company grew to 142 members, and had made 820 dollars, they still had a debt of more than 3,000.

To overcome the debt they offer the insurance to all active and retired members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp, and in turn changed the name to United Services Automobile Association. Two years later to increase growth, USAA’s board set aside funds for promotion, by 1927 the business was thriving, but the management was in chaos, causing a split, and eventually a breakaway group, plotting to overthrow the company.

On January 1, 1928, Major General Ernest Hinds, commanding general of Fort Sam Houston in Texas, became both the general manager and secretary-treasurer of USAA. Assured that he would have complete control of the company, Hinds took over.
